The river Charente runs through the town and its banks play host to many festivals, circuses and concerts in the summer, including an annual blues festival with an international line-up (2015 included Katie Melua and Lenny Kravitz).

Besides the Romanesque cathedral and other historic buildings, the town also has museums, theatres, a bowling alley, concert hall, exhibition and conference venue, and every January, hosts an international comics festival.

The owner writes: “We have lived in Wales, the Cotswolds, the Vendee and I can only say it’s the best hacking country ever! White chalk roads that go on forever in all directions, no gates or barbed wire, no fences”.

The House (450m²)
The house consists of 8 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 reception rooms with double doors off the main hall. Large family kitchen, utility, cloakroom, butler’s pantry and dining hall. The main hall has a stunning, split staircase in walnut leading to the first floor bedrooms and bathrooms. A second staircase rises from the butler’s pantry. The ground floor is also home to the original bread oven and potager. This has been renovated to enhance all the original features to make a stunning dining/party room.

Downstairs floors are tiled throughout, upstairs floor are wooden. High ceilings with (original) decorative ceiling roses. Fireplaces of stone and marble. The house has been completely renovated and is very light, airy and sunny.

The property benefits from a new, economical central heating system – heat pump with auxiliary oil-fired boiler; all renewed in 2007/8.

The south-facing frontage looks onto a large lawn, accessed through a grand main entrance archway.  A further archway leads to the rear courtyard, home to the kitchen garden, greenhouse, boiler room and dove house. A garden door leads to the field, currently grassland, vegetable garden and orchard. In the field are two small stables, currently hay storage.

Swimming pool with roman steps. The pool has been built within the high stone walls, affording complete privacy and making a stunning, relaxing setting.

Building adjacent, housing pool equipment and with loft above, accessed through the house (could be converted to office or cottage).

Opposite the front of the house, a guardian’s cottage to the right of the main gateway; in need of some work, but in good structural order.

Between the house and the gate, a large stone barn housing:
  • Party room for the summer with “citern” underneath.
  • Large stable, 5m X 6m.
  • Garage with loft over.
  • Double cowshed (with hay racks) currently used as a workshop.
  • Pigsty.
All in good condition. With minimal work, the large barn could easily accommodate several stables.
